Like many hotels around the country in small towns, the Mossman Hotel has an interesting history. Originally a single storey galvanised iron hotel built in 1870 and known as Ryan’s Hotel in Craiglie approximately 4-5 miles south-west of Port Douglas, it was shifted by bullock dray to Mossman in 1894 and resurrected as The Mossman Hotel in its current location on Front Street.

The original hotel succumbed to fire in the early 1950’s and was rebuilt in the art deco style we see today. The plans were drawn in late 1953, and construction was completed in 1955. In the early 1900’s, Mossman boasted 5 hotels, today we only have 2 operating.

We purchased the Hotel in February 2014 and opened our award-winning bottle shop in the Woolworths complex in April going on to win the QHA ‘Best Detached Bottleshop’ Award three years in a row and being inducted into the Hall of Fame the following year.

We purchased the building next door, 7 Front Street in 2019 and began works to return the building to its former glory. Late 2022, we opened Hughie’s Wine Bar. Named after Hugh Mossman, a miner and the towns namesake, he was known as the social lion of Charters Towers, so we felt it fitting to name our bar after one who loved a good time!

7 Front Street has been the home for many businesses from a garage to a bike shop and now a beautiful bar.
